Lichborne: Guys and Ghouls
Welcome to Lichborne, where we ask the tough questions: Will Death Knights be ready for launch? Will they really have 3 trees that can tank and DPS? And what kind of a ghoul name is Eyeslobber?
Ghouls have been one of my most beloved features of the Death Knight for some now. I like having an undead squire by my side, and they can be pretty useful for some extra dps and even some lifesaving interference in a pinch. However, they also felt like one of the least firmed up aspects of a Death Knight for some time now, with abilities coming and going on a patchly basis, and bugs that kept the ghoul from being summoned or allowed to summon a massive army of ghouls in no time flat.
Still, they have their uses, and despite still being incredibly flimsy healthwise, do offer a decent amount of extra damage when they’re up. The drawback is that 50 silver is a lot for a pet that lasts less than 5 minutes, and without points in the Unholy tree, the Ghoul is completely uncontrollable, and may have a tendency to run into suicidal situations without listening to a word you say.
As far as perfecting the Ghoul and deciding on its place in the class, there seems to be two schools of thought. The first, mostly made of Unholy specced Death Knights, sees the Ghoul

The Man, The Myth, the Legend.
How Stalvan deserves the dark powers and the legend he’s gained are honestly unclear to me. Make no mistake, what he did was rather heinous. He killed at least 5 people, possibly more if he killed the Flintridges’ other servants or any bystanders. But was the crime itself so bloody and gruesome that it attracted the necromantic energies and damned spirits that flock to Stalvan’s old haunts and protect his past?
There’s two theories I can think of as to why this is so. The first is that he lives in Duskwood. Duskwood is a place that is currently in the grip of a powerful darkness. It seems a magnet to dark forces and misfortune. It may be that the darkness gripping Duskwood or the demonic power radiating from nearby Karazhan somehow latched on to Stalvan’s insanity and negative emotions and manifested all these powers and turned him undead.
The other possibility is that he’s always been a Necromancer. Perhaps the mysterious headmaster Crillian was a Necromancer or a Warlock. This would also match up with the mysterious happenings with the undelivered letter in Goldshire. Certainly if he’s had Necromantic powers all along, it would explain why he’s summoned ghosts to help protect his past and ghouls

Beacon of Light
I raved about Beacon of Light last week when I played around with it on Beta. My fears were confirmed when Ghostcrawler said she felt that, “it may be a little OP right now”, because to be quite frank the spell kicks major butt. It’s like Blessing of Light and Binding Heal’s bastard love child on steroids. I like the way it works now and Blizzard will probably need to just adjust the numbers a bit and not necessarily rework the spell again. If you’re not seeing how amazing the spell is, you probably have the wrong rank keybound — a bug showed up on Beta during the last build that had several, non-functional versions of the spell appear on the trainer.

Improving Mana and melee DPS with Auction House upgrades
As we level from 6 to 10, the two biggest annoyances we face are low Mana and weak melee combat damage.
Each level, your Mana pool will increase. Unfortunately, the extra Mana is sucked away by increased casting costs as your Wrath spell gets boosted to rank 2, and again when you gain Entangling Roots at level 8.
Low Mana is an issue that never really goes away; especially once you get different forms to shift in and out of. Mana is based on your Intellect stat; 1 point of Intellect provides 15 Mana. For as long as we are playing our class as casters, we can compensate for low Mana by purchasing equipment with Intellect.
For our low melee damage at these levels, the blame can be lain on our vendor or quest reward weapons, which have a very low base DPS. Again, we can compensate for this with better gear.
If you have been dutifully gaining income through Herb and Ore farming, or by sending money to your Druid from a higher level character, then once you reach levels 6 or 7 you should expect to find some nice Uncommon quality items available on the Auction House to upgrade your gear.
Around level 6, leather armor can begin to be found that has Intellect on it to increase the size of your Mana pool, and Stamina to

Warrior Specs
Fury
How to Spot: Most likely dual-wielding and in Berserk stance. Also keep an eye out for Rampage, an ability that pops up after they hit a crit– it increases their attack power for 30 seconds, and is stackable up to five times.
They Can: Do damage, and lots of it. Fury warriors are almost like Rogues in plate.
They Can’t: Tank as well as a Protection warrior. And as a healer myself, don’t ever let a warrior, of any spec, tank while dual-wielding.
Arms
How to Spot: Mortal Strike is the big one– it’s an ability they can put on a target that causes all healing done to that target to drop by half. Arms warriors also get specializations for two-handed weapons, so if you see a warrior running around cutting people apart in PvP with a Cloud-style megasword, you’re probably looking at an Arms warrior.
They Can: PvP, and well. That Mortal Strike is a killer, and combined with Improved Rend and Deep Wounds, they are the kings of scary status effects.
They Can’t: Hit a lot. With a two-hander, it’s all about power, not speed. But when they do hit, they hit like a truck.
Protection (a.k.a Prot)
How to Spot: They’re usually wearing a shield and tanking– Prot warriors can take damage, but they’re

Professional benefits in Wrath
Thanks to the information slowly (we just can’t get them fast enough around here…) leaking out from the Wrath of the Lich King Beta, we already learned that the professions trend started in The Burning Crusade will continue in the new expansion. The Burning Crusade (or Patch 2.0) introduced new items or enchantments that confer bonuses exclusively the character with the profession, such as ring enchants for Enchanters or Bind-on-Pickup gems for Jewelcrafters. This was a welcome change that rewarded players with their choice of profession — almost to the point where such profession-only bonuses compelled many to choose professions somewhat incongruous with their class.
Hardcore PvP players pursued Enchanting for the ring enchants, for example, while hardcore raiders leveled their Leatherworking for the Drums of Battle. In Wrath of the Lich King, the different professions get even more exclusive goodies designed to keep professions more or less in tune with their intended classes. Eliah reported about the passive buffs for gatherers, and they seem to be in thematically tuned to some classes. Take Master of Anatomy, for example, which seems to be a benefit given to Skinners. Traditionally, Rogues, Hunters, and Shamans were the

The Death Knight starting experience
A couple of days ago, it was with a little good fortune and a lot of soul-selling by WoW Insider lead Elizabeth Harper that I finally got my grubby little hands on a precious Beta key. Over 2 Gigabytes worth of installer and patches later, I found myself creating a Death Knight. It is a fair certainty that every player who upgrades to the Wrath of the Lich King will create one. In fact, after playing the class for just a short time, I have to say that every single player should. The Death Knight starting experience is the single most immersive role-playing experience in the game.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not too big on role-playing. I mostly skip quest flavor text and go directly to the objectives. But the Death Knight starting experience — it’s really called that — is just game design at its finest. Blizzard mentioned that one design flaw in The Burning Crusade was not making Illidan’s presence felt early on in the Outlands. In fact, aside from the raiders who managed to set foot in the 25-man raids, a large number of the player base never got to see the bad guys driving the story of The Burning Crusade. Well… when you play a Death Knight, you won’t just feel the lore, it punches you in the

RoleCraft: Aligning Roleplay, Part 2

Jim Moreno’s “RoleCraft” MMO Column – RSS 2.0
On the last edition of RoleCraft, the discussion was an introduction on Alignments and their significance for roleplayers and their characters. Your character is hopefully going to develop and portray some form of a personality over its existence. Fitting those traits and beliefs to an alignment, i.e., giving your character’s character a specific nomenclature, helps set a foundation upon which to continue to grow with some form of method, even if that method is madness.
As mentioned in the last article, prime consideration towards a character’s alignment should be made from the point of view as to what is going to be fun for you to play. If it ain’t no fun, it won’t get done. Yet, another element to consider is the overall ’spirit’ of whatever MMORPG you happen to be playing.
At times, the differences between Good and Evil are very distinguishable. Sometimes they’re not. The same applies to the worlds of MMORPGs. Take WoW,
